Description

This astonishing 19th century antique over-size Bakshaish carpet is a rare piece that boasts a wonderfully composed and classically inspired tribal aesthetic, which is hard to find in rugs of this scale. Its bold and geometric drawing has a dramatic effect that bursts with expressive, creative energy. At the center stands a generously-scaled, geometric medallion with jagged edges in gorgeous rich colors of deep tomato red, dark indigo, cerulean blue and soft yellow against an ivory field adorned with dainty little scattered multi-colored, joyful looking space fillers. The beautiful corner pieces boasts a deep indigo decorated with more angular fillers and delicate blossoms in coral pink and ivory. The large main border echoes the tomato red of the medallion and its angularity in its execution of floral heads and meandering serrated leaves.

This wonderful carpet is a combination of urban and tribal sensibilities and offers multiple points of interest to the viewer. The beautiful touches of abrash that can be seen throughout the carpet in the medallion, the corner pieces and the main borders are such a wonderful feat of craftsmanship that enhance depth and capture and reflect light in myriad delightful ways. The deeply saturated organic dyes are infused with warmth and softness which renders the contrast of colors in a mellow, not stark, fashion.

This 19th century antique over-size Bakshaish carpet is a highly collectible, rarely found piece of woven craftsmanship that offers the best of classic and tribal design sensibilities and can be a magnificent foundation piece for modern, classical or mid-century interiors.
