Description

A highly decorative and traditionally over-sized 19th century Agra rug, from Northern India, inspired by classical Persian court rugs of the 16th century, with lustrous wool and a color palette of deeply saturated hues including red, goldenrod yellow, teal blue and teal green in its field set against a more restrained gold in its border. The rug brings together the classical reds and blues of Persian rugs with lighter, more ethereal hues of Indian masters such as pinks, golds and yellows, which is one of the primary features that gives an Agra rug its distinctive character.

The central medallion and the field of the rug are adorned with finely drawn floral patterns interspersed with elegant figures of peacocks and parrots as well as the depictions of four domed cubes looking like pergolas, all coming together to create a sense of a peaceful, opulent and orderly garden of paradise. Agra rugs of this caliber are great examples of superb craftsmanship and highly praised works of collectible art with their extremely fine weave, unique interpretation of design and fascinating use of color.
