‘Oriental rug’ is a term that encompasses a large geographical area. These rugs are widely made throughout the world now, but antique oriental rugs traditionally come from Turkey, China, the Caucasian region, India, and more.

Archaeologists have found proof of the creation of pile rugs dating back to the Han period in Western China. While many people believe that rugs were made before this time, it’s impossible to say as most evidence has likely been lost. There are some early writings that could translate to ‘rug’, but it’s difficult to say if their idea of what makes a rug is the same as ours.

The Paxyryk carpet is the oldest carpet ever found. It was in Scythian burial mounds and dated to the 5th Century. The history of antique Oriental rugs along with their beauty and diversity makes them extremely valuable to collectors.
