If you’re looking for an elegant addition to your home, antique European carpets and rugs are perfect for you. These antique pieces have a storied history that makes them extremely valuable to collectors. The first instance of knotted pile rugs in Europe was during the Islamic occupation of Spain in the 11th century by the Ummayad Caliphate.

This style was then heavily influenced by Italy, France, and Persia. The result was antique rugs that featured geometric patterns embellished with figurative panels and armorials of the nobles that commissioned the rugs. These armorials allow collectors to trace the rugs back to their origins.

As European fashion move towards bold wreath and trellis designs, Spanish and European rugs followed. Europeans preferred deep colors that showed off their sense of royalty, preferring gold and red colors. Over time, these colors have faded into milder tones, creating what many collectors believe to be an even more elegant design.
